Poolside Sphinx
Kai's stomach churned as they approached the community pool, the chlorine smell hitting them like a memory of every summer they'd never been invited to anything. This was different—Zara actually invited them. Zara, the girl who made organized chaos look effortless, whose Instagram stories were basically social currency.
The pool area was already packed. Zara waved from near the diving board, surrounded by her carefully curated friend group. Kai hesitated, then grabbed a spot on the edge where the water lapped at their ankles. Perfect distance from the center of everything.
"You gonna sit there all day being weirdly mysterious?" someone asked. It was Leo, Zara's ex, looking annoyingly hot without trying.
"Just observing," Kai said, gesturing vaguely at the pool. "Watching the social ecosystem. Like a spy in plain sight."
Leo laughed. "More like the sphinx over by the snack bar. Riddling everyone with that intense stare of yours."
Kai's face heated. They hadn't realized they'd been staring.
"Alright, Sphinx," Zara appeared, dripping wet and grinning. "Riddle me this: why haven't you been in the water yet?"
"Not really a pool person," Kai muttered.
"Bull. Everyone's a pool person. You're just overthinking it." Zara splashed water at them. "Come on. The water's actually fine once you're in."
Kai stood up slowly. The truth was, they'd never learned to swim properly. Too many years of avoiding pool parties, beach days, anything involving bathing suits and vulnerability. But Zara was watching, waiting, and suddenly Kai was tired of being the person who watched from the edge.
They slipped into the water. It wasn't warm, but it wasn't freezing either. Just... water. Elemental, simple, completely unconcerned with teenage social hierarchies.
"See?" Zara called. "Not so bad."
Kai ducked under, letting the world go muffled and blue. When they surfaced, Leo was doing a terrible cannonball nearby, and everyone was laughing. And for the first time, Kai wasn't watching from the edge. They were part of the splash, part of the noise, part of the moment.
The sphinx had left the building. The spy had gone undercover. And the water was just water.
