Poolside Sphinx
Maya stood at the edge of the pool clutching her solo cup like it was a lifeline. The end-of-summer party raged around her—Brenda's annual blowout, the social event that could make or break your status going into sophomore year. And Maya, chubby Maya with her cheap one-piece from Target, was definitely not breaking anything.
The water sparkled invitingly, but Maya couldn't. Not with half the junior class watching, probably whispering about how she'd look in a swimsuit. She felt like a spy behind enemy lines, constantly scanning for threats—mostly Jessica and her minions, who were currently draped over the patio furniture like they owned the place.
Then she saw him—Leo, leaning against the backyard fence with that enigmatic half-smile that made him seem like a living sphinx. Riddle wrapped in mystery wrapped in a really cute oversized hoodie.
"You gonna stand there all night guarding that cup?" Leo appeared beside her, making Maya jump. "Or are you actually gonna get in the pool?"
"I'm good," Maya squeaked. Great. Smooth.
"You know," Leo said, "Jessica's been giving you death glares for twenty minutes. That's gotta be exhausting to bear."
Maya froze. "She—what?"
"She's intimidated by you," Leo said. "Nobody ever calls her out on her BS like you did in English last year. Jessica hates not being the scariest thing in the room." He gestured at the pool. "Meanwhile, you're standing here acting like the water's gonna literally eat you."
Maya looked at the pool, then at Jessica (who was indeed glaring), then back at Leo. "Are you for real?"
"Cross my heart." Leo shrugged. "Also? Your swimsuit's actually kinda cool. The color suits you."
Before Maya could overthink it, she shoved her cup at him and dove into the pool. The water swallowed her whole, cool and perfect and freeing. When she surfaced, dripping and breathless, Jessica was still glaring but Leo was grinning.
"Better?" he called from the edge.
"Yeah," Maya said, feeling something shift in her chest—something like power, something like possibility. "Actually way better."
Sometimes sphinxes did give straight answers. And sometimes bears were just bears you didn't have to carry anymore. Maya dove under again, finally ready to make waves.
