Poolside Sphinx

Leo stood at the edge of the **pool**, clutching his red solo cup like it was a lifeline. The annual end-of-summer bash at Jordan's house was in full swing, and he'd spent the last hour pretending to be deeply interested in the decorative landscaping.

"You look like you're about to throw up," said Maya, appearing beside him. She was The **Sphinx** of Northwood High — mysterious, unreadable, and supposedly impossible to impress. Guys whispered that she'd once made Tyler Johnson cry just by staring at him.

"Just warming up," Leo lied, gesturing vaguely at the water. "Any minute now."

Maya's lip curled. "You've been saying that for forty-five minutes."

"Are you... keeping track of me?" Leo's voice squeaked. Smooth.

She shrugged. "You're the only one not jumping into the **bull** pen out there." She nodded toward the pool, where a chaotic game of chicken fight was underway. "Besides, you looked like you needed saving."

His stomach did something illegal. "From what?"

"Social suicide." Maya's eyes glittered. "I'm Maya, by the way. Not 'The Sphinx,' not 'that weird quiet girl,' just Maya. And you're Leo, the guy who's been awkwardly holding the same cup of lukewarm fruit punch since 7 PM."

"It's actually pretty good," Leo said automatically, then took a sip and nearly choked. "What IS this?"

"Jordan's mom tried to be exotic this year. It's **papaya**, mango, and way too much ginger." She reached over and took his cup, dumping both their drinks into a nearby cooler. "Come on. We're getting out of here."

"We — what?" But she was already walking toward the gate, and Leo's feet were moving before his brain could process what was happening.

They ended up at the park down the street, sitting on the swings in the confusing golden-hour light. Maya told him she wasn't mysterious, just anxious. Leo admitted he wasn't cool, just practiced at fading into the background.

"So," Maya said, kicking her swing higher. "Truth or dare?"

"Truth."

"Boring." She grinned, and for the first time all night, he saw something real underneath the Sphinx reputation. "Fine. What's the one thing you wish you could say to everyone at school?"

Leo thought about it. "That none of us have it figured out. We're all just pretending."

Maya nodded slowly. "Exactly." She bumped her swing against his. "Well. Welcome to the club, Leo. We meet every Tuesday. Bring snacks next time."
