Poolside Sphinx
The chlorine smell hit me before I even saw the water. My first pool party as a high schooler, and I was already regretting it. Everyone looked so comfortable in their skin, while I stood there in my too-long board shorts, gripping a warm orange soda like it was a lifeline.
Then I saw her.
Leila sat alone on a lounge chair, legs crossed, reading a massive book while everyone else splashed around. She was like a sphinx — unreadable, mysterious, totally out of place. Rumor was she'd transferred from some private school across town, but nobody knew the real story.
I became her personal spy, watching from behind my soda can. Not creepy, I told myself. Just observing. Noticing how she'd peel her orange with slow precision, how she'd glance up every time someone laughed too loud, like she was cataloging social dynamics I'd never understand.
"You gonna stare all day, or you gonna come in?" My best friend Marcus splashed water at me. "Bro's been acting weird since we got here."
I shoved him away, but my heart was suddenly running a marathon. Because Leila was looking at me. Actually looking at me, like she'd noticed my amateur spy routine the whole time.
She stood up, book still in hand, and walked toward me. Every single conversation near the pool seemed to pause.
"You've been holding that orange soda for forty minutes," she said. "It's probably warm by now." Then she smiled — a real smile, crinkling by her eyes, and I realized the sphinx wasn't mysterious after all. She was just waiting for someone to actually talk to her.
"Want the rest of it?" I held it out like an idiot. She laughed, and the sound made everything else fade away.
Later, when Marcus asked what we talked about for two hours by the snack bar, I couldn't explain it. How we discovered we both loved terrible sci-fi novels. How she confessed she hated pool parties but came because her mom made her. How I finally stopped running from the fear that I didn't belong.
The sphinx had a name. And she thought my awkward surveillance was kind of cute.
