Poolside Sphinx
Maya was basically a professional social media spy by sophomore year. Her thumb muscle memory was insane—insta-stalking every popular kid's story, watching Lila's pool party prep like it was national security intel. Lila, whose dad owned that massive house with the actual Olympic-sized pool in the backyard. The same pool where Maya had definitely NOT been invited.
Then came the invitation. Slid into her DMs at 11 PM on a Tuesday: 'Pool party this Saturday. Come through.'
Maya spent four hours outfit-replanning. Running through scenarios in her head like a mental boot camp. What if she cannonballed and her swimsuit malfunctioned? What if everyone was already in those perfect friend groups and she was stuck floating alone like a socially awkward island?
Saturday arrived. The backyard was already popping when she showed up—music, laughter, the smell of sunscreen and expensive perfume. There was Lila, surrounded by her squad like human jewelry, holding court on a lounge chair like some poolside sphinx with perfect hair and impossible confidence. Her stare could've turned people into stone or made them question their entire existence.
Then came the bear.
Not metaphorical. An actual baby bear cub came wandering out of the woods behind the pool fence, looking confused and completely over it. Everyone froze. Even Lila's sphinx energy cracked.
'Is that...' someone whispered.
'Maybe it's lost,' Maya said, and before her brain could process what she was doing, she was running toward the back gate, phone already dialing animal control. 'Hey, yeah, there's a bear cub at—'
The cub turned, looked at her with these soulful eyes, then scrambled back into the woods like it remembered something important. But in that moment, nobody was checking their phones. Nobody was thinking about who was cool or who wasn't. Everyone was just... together.
'That was insane,' Lila said, actually looking at Maya for the first time. 'You just went full Bear Grylls.'
'Maya,' she said, suddenly aware of everyone watching. 'And yeah, I guess.'
'Wanna play beer pong?' Lila asked. 'You're on my team. Obviously.'
Maya's heart did this whole gymnastic routine. 'Cool.'
Later that night, Maya posted a photo: Lila's pool at sunset, a tiny bear emoji in the corner. Caption: 'Poolside sphinxes and unexpected bears. New squad who dis?'
The spy had become the story.
