Poolside Social Pyramid

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her **water** bottle like it was a lifeline. The July heat was already making her skin feel sticky, and the party had barely started. She'd spent the entire night before doom-scrolling through Jake's Instagram, which meant she was currently operating on three hours of sleep and pure anxiety.

"You look like a **zombie**," her best friend Chloe whispered, sliding up beside her. "Did you even sleep?"

"Define sleep," Maya muttered, smoothing down her bikini top for the tenth time. She felt grossly underdressed compared to the other girls, who somehow made tiny bikinis look effortless while Maya felt like she was playing dress-up in her older sister's clothes.

The social hierarchy at Lincoln High was basically a **pyramid** scheme, and the pool parties hosted by the popular kids were where it all played out in terrifying clarity. At the top were the varsity athletes, the ones whose names got chanted at pep rallies. Next came the pretty people who dated the athletes. Then everyone else.

Maya was usually in the "everyone else" category. But today was different. Today, Lucas—the **baseball** team's star pitcher and crush of half the sophomore class—had actually texted her first. Hey, coming to Tyler's party? You should.

Chloe had spent two hours helping Maya get ready, insisting that this was Maya's moment to finally escape social obscurity. "You've been low-key flirting with Lucas all semester," Chloe had said while curling Maya's hair. "This is it. This is your main character energy moment."

Across the pool, Lucas laughed at something Tyler said, all effortless charm and golden-boy energy. He caught Maya's eye and waved. Maya's stomach did that awful fluttery thing that made her feel like she might throw up.

"He's waving at you!" Chloe hissed. "Go over there!"

"I can't just—" Maya started, but then Lucas was walking toward her, all confident strides and sun-bleached hair.

"Hey," he said, grinning. "I wasn't sure you'd come."

"Yeah, well..." Maya managed, feeling her face heat up. "Here I am."

"Good." Lucas's smile widened. "I saved you a seat."
