Poolside Shenanigans

The water shimmered like liquid diamonds under the July sun, but Maya's stomach churned with more than just butterfly-inducing nervousness. She stood at the edge of Johnson's pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline, feeling like a goldfish in a bowl — exposed, small, and desperately wanting to blend into the background.

"Yo, Maya! You gonna stand there all day or actually cannonball?" Jake called from the deep end, dripping wet and annoyingly confident. Typical jock behavior.

Her best friend Chen leaned over and whispered, "He's totally checking you out. This is your moment."

Maya's eyes darted around the pool party. Everyone seemed so comfortable in their skin, while she felt like she was undercover, a spy gathering intel on how to be normal. She'd spent months watching Jake from the safety of her biology class seat, memorizing his laugh, the way he ran his hand through his hair when nervous, his obsession with the baseball team.

Just then, Tyler — the self-proclaimed party king and certified bull in the china shop of social situations — shoved past her to grab a pool noodle. "Coming through, losers!" he bellowed, splashing water everywhere.

Maya stumbled back, her phone slipping from her grip. Time seemed to slow as she watched it sink into the azure depths, her entire social life, her conversations with Jake, her carefully curated posts — all disappearing into the watery abyss.

Without thinking, she plunged in after it.

The water swallowed her whole. For a second, everything was muffled and peaceful. Then hands grabbed her waist, pulling her up.

She broke the surface, gasping, to find Jake inches away, holding her dripping phone. "Lost this?"

Their faces flushed. Tyler hollered something about.Getting a room. Chen did a fist pump of victory.

"Thanks," Maya managed, tucking wet hair behind her ear. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but for the first time all summer, she didn't want to disappear.

"No problem," Jake said, his voice softer now. "Hey, you coming to the baseball game Friday? We could use more fans. Actually, I could use... one specific fan."

Maya grinned. Maybe being seen wasn't so terrifying after all.
