Poolside Secrets and Papaya Days

Maya crouched behind the lounge chair like the world's most awkward spy, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The Taylor birthday pool party raged on without her—junior year social hierarchy playing out in neon bikinis and exaggerated laughter.

She'd been swimming laps earlier until her fingers pruned, anything to avoid the gauntlet of small talk. Now she was hiding, watching the family's orange tabby cat stroll along the pool edge like he owned everything. At least someone here had confidence.

"Maya! Finally!" Sophia Taylor materialized, holding a fruit bowl. "You have to try this papaya—Elena's mom brought it fresh from the farm."

The papaya sat there, vibrant orange and impossibly foreign, like everything else about today. Maya's stomach tightened. "Thanks, maybe later."

She thought about her goldfish back home, Bubbles, living his best life in his tiny castle without worrying about papaya or pool parties or whether her swimsuit looked weird.

"I've been looking for you," Chase said suddenly, appearing behind her. Water droplets still clung to his hair from swimming. "You disappeared after that cannonball contest."

Maya's phone buzzed—her friends demanding updates on her stealth mission. She ignored it.

"Just... taking a break."

"From swimming or from people?" His grin was unfairly cute. "I'm told I'm an expert at both."

"Maya! Come taste this!" Sophia called. "The papaya's actually good!"

Chase raised an eyebrow. "Challenge accepted?"

Something shifted in Maya's chest. Maybe being a spy wasn't about hiding. Maybe it was about finally letting yourself be seen.

"Yeah," she said, standing up. "Challenge accepted."

The cat meowed approvingly from his perch as Maya walked toward the papaya, toward Chase, toward whatever came next.
