Poolside Secrets
Maya's first mistake was thinking she could pull off the varsity jacket look. Her second was letting her sister talk her into joining the swim team freshman year. Now she was stuck at this party, chlorine still clinging to her skin like a bad breakup, watching Jake—the guy she'd been lowkey spying on via Instagram stories for three weeks—laugh at something Brianna said.
Brianna, of course. The bull of the girls' swim team. The one who'd "forgotten" Maya's name three times at practice. The one whose dad owned half the country club.
"Hey, swimmer girl," Brianna called, waving a red plastic cup. "Come meet Jake."
Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like it was swimming upstream. She grabbed a handful of spinach dip from a nearby platter—something healthy-ish to occupy her hands—and navigated through the crowd.
"So," Jake said, grinning. "You're the new distance specialist."
"Yeah," Maya managed, suddenly aware of the spinach between her teeth. She could feel it. That tiny green wedge of social suicide, broadcasting her existence to everyone.
Brianna leaned in. "You've got a little..." She gestured at her own teeth, smirk widening.
Jake's expression shifted. Something uncomfortable passed between them—recognition, maybe. Like he knew exactly what Brianna was doing.
Maya swallowed. Hard. "Actually," she said, voice steadier than she felt, "I'm not the distance specialist. That's Sarah. I swim butterfly. And my name's Maya."
She turned and walked away, spinach and all. Behind her, she heard Jake say something to Brianna—something sharp—and suddenly the bull didn't seem so scary anymore. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments are the ones that finally make you feel seen.
