Poolside Secrets
I crouched behind the shed, basically being a creep at my own neighborhood pool party. Great first impression, Marcus. The party I'd dreamed about all summer was finally happening, and I was lurking in the bushes like some amateur spy trying to gather intel on why everyone else seemed so effortlessly cool while I was over here questioning my entire existence.
Then chaos erupted. Mrs. Henderson's massive golden retriever, Buster, came bounding through the fence gap like a furry torpedo, straight toward the pool. The cool kids scattered. Drinks spilled. Someone shrieked. I scrambled up from my hiding spot, my heart hammering against my ribs like it was trying to escape.
"Buster! No!" I yelled, lunging forward. The dog cannonballed into the water, sending a mini tsunami over the edge. Half the popular crew got absolutely soaked.
Dead silence.
Then Tyler—the guy who'd been giving me crap all year—started laughing. Actually laughing. "Okay, THAT was legendary."
I stood there dripping wet, my dumb oversized t-shirt clinging to everything, waiting for the inevitable roast. But Jenna, whose hair I'd literally been spying on from behind the shed, just shook her head with this tiny smile.
"You're weird, Marcus," she said, tossing me a towel. "But like, in a good way?"
Later, as the sun dipped below the fence and the pool lights flickered on, I found myself sitting on the edge with the actual friend group, not hiding behind a shed. Buster the dog lay passed out nearby, living his best life. Tyler kept calling me "Pool Boy" like it was my actual name.
And yeah, maybe I'd started the night as a nervous wreck playing spy from the bushes, but somewhere between Buster's aquatic debut and Tyler's relentless teasing, I'd accidentally figured something out: nobody was as effortless as they looked. We were all just trying not to embarrass ourselves in front of each other.
Some nights, you don't need to be the coolest person there. You just need to be the one who dives in when the dog jumps the fence.
