Poolside Secrets

Maya hovered at the edge of the pool party, clutching her phone like a lifeline. Her hair—normally a cascade of perfect coils—had decided to rebel in the humidity, frizzing out like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Meanwhile, every other girl looked like they'd stepped out of a TikTok tutorial.

The water glittered with that early-evening magic, but Maya felt more like a spy behind enemy lines than a guest. She'd been crushing on Jake since September, watching him from the back of algebra class like it was her part-time job. Now Jake—the baseball team's golden boy, the guy whose Instagram posts made everyone's day—was actually in the same backyard as her.

And he was looking right at her.

"Hey," Jake said, dripping pool water and casual confidence. "You coming in or what?"

Maya's brain short-circuited. "I'm good. The water's... cold."

"It's July," Jake laughed, shaking his wet hair like a golden retriever. Water droplets sprayed everywhere, and somehow Maya didn't even care about her hair anymore. "Your hair looks awesome, by the way."

She blinked. "It's a disaster."

"It's got personality." He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Hey, can I tell you something? I've been kinda spying on your drawings in English. You're insane at that anime stuff."

Maya's stomach did this weird flip-flop thing. "You've noticed me?"

"Notice you?" Jake raised an eyebrow. "Maya, I've been trying to figure out how to talk to you all semester. That's why I'm even at this party—I knew you'd be here."

A girl screamed as someone got pushed into the pool, shattering the moment. But Maya found herself smiling, really smiling, for the first time all night.

"So," Jake said, gesturing toward the water. "About that cold..."

"Fine," Maya said, kicking off her sandals. "But if I get pruned fingers, you're taking the blame."

"Deal." He grinned. "Besides, I've heard baseball players make the best splash targets."
