Poolside Secrets
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, fingers tangling in her curls. Third time straightening her hair this week, and the humidity was already plotting against her. Jake's pool party was in two hours, and her hair had opinions.
"You coming?" her mom yelled from downstairs.
"Yeah!" Maya grabbed her swimsuit. The one-piece with the high leg cuts that made her feel like she actually had hips unlike half the girls in her grade who still looked like middle schoolers.
Outside, the backyard was already chaotic. Pool music blasting, kids screaming, that smell of coconut sunscreen and chlorine. Jake's parents were rich-rich — the kind that had a pool house bigger than Maya's actual apartment.
She spotted Taylor by the deep end, looking flawless as ever in a bikini that probably cost more than Maya's entire wardrobe. Taylor was laughing at something Jake said, flipping her perfect beach waves.
Maya slipped into the water, exhaling as the coolness swallowed her. This. This was why she came. The weightlessness, the muffled underwater world where nobody could see her overthinking everything.
She was doing laps when she noticed something weird. Near the pool house entrance, someone was ducking behind the storage shed. It was Lucas — that quiet kid from her history class who literally never spoke.
Okay, random.
Maya kept swimming but kept one eye on him. He was acting super shady, glancing around like he was in a spy movie or something, texting furiously, then sliding his phone into his back pocket and slipping toward the side gate.
Nope. Her curiosity was officially piqued.
She popped out of the pool, grabbing a towel and following at a distance. Lucas was by the side fence, hand on the latch, when Maya stepped onto the grass.
"You know Jake's dad has security cameras, right?"
Lucas jumped like she'd electrocuted him. "What? No he doesn't."
"Bro, I can literally see the camera from here. What are you doing?"
He sighed, shoulders dropping. "Fine. I'm meeting someone."
"Who?"
"Taylor. She's supposed to sneak out and meet me by the corner. Her parents are super strict and she's not allowed to 'date' until she's sixteen, which is arbitrary and outdated but whatever."
Maya blinked. Taylor. Perfect, can-do-no-wrong Taylor, was sneaking out to meet Lucas?
"Wait, you and Taylor?"
"We've been talking for like two months," Lucas said, finally looking at her. "She's actually really cool when she's not performing for everyone."
Maya thought about her hair. The straightening, the curling, the constant trying to look like everyone else. Performing.
"She likes your curls," Lucas added suddenly. "She told me once she wishes she had hair with personality."
Maya's hand went to her head automatically. The frizz was already creeping back in.
"You should tell her," Lucas said. "She's probably somewhere wishing she was you."
He slipped through the gate, and Maya stood there for a second, water still dripping down her back, making a puddle on the concrete.
She walked back to the pool, dodging a canonball splash that soaked her already-wet towel. Taylor was still by the deep end, laughing, her hair catching the sunlight like she'd been Photoshopped.
But Maya knew something now. Something real.
She shook out her curls, letting them do their thing. Whatever. The humidity could win today. She had more important things to worry about.
