Poolside Secrets

The air smelled like chlorine and cheap sunscreen, that specific Friday afternoon vibe that made everything feel possible. Maya adjusted her bikini strap for the tenth time, hyper-aware that Tyler was actually at Jenna's pool party.

"Stop spiraling," Chloe whispered, sliding her sunglasses down her nose. "You're literally vibrating."

"I cannot **bear** this level of anxiety," Maya groaned, flopping onto the lounger. "What if he thinks I'm basic?"

Chloe's **dog**, Barnaby, chose that moment to shake himself vigorously directly next to them, spraying chlorinated water everywhere. The golden retriever had been the unofficial guest of honor all summer since his owner was away at college.

"Ew, Barnaby, WHY," Chloe shrieked.

Then Maya saw it—Tyler by the **pool** gate, slipping something to Jenna's older brother. A quick exchange, both looking around like they were afraid of being caught.

"Okay, did you see that?" Maya whispered, suddenly wide awake.

"See what?"

"Tyler and Jason. They were totally acting shady."

"No way," Chloe gasped. "Do you think they're dealing?"

"I don't know, but I'm gonna **spy** on them."

"You're ridiculous," Chloe laughed, but she was already following Maya toward the house.

They crept along the side fence, peering through the slats of the wooden privacy fence. Tyler and Jason were talking in low voices, and Maya caught fragments: "...can't tell anyone..." "...seriously sketchy..."

Her heart raced. This was it. The drama that would make junior year legendary.

"What are you two doing?" Jenna's voice made them both jump.

But before Maya could stammer out an excuse, Tyler spotted them and grinned. "Perfect timing. We were just about to test it."

"Test what?" Maya asked, trying to sound casual while her palms were sweating.

"Jason figured out how to hack the school's attendance system," Tyler said, his eyes bright with mischief. "So we can skip first period without consequences."

Maya's jaw dropped. "You're kidding."

"Dead serious. You in?"

Barnaby burst through the gate then, barking joyfully, and suddenly they were all laughing, the secret spreading between them like electricity. This wasn't just a rumor anymore—it was an adventure, and Maya was right in the middle of it.

"So in," she said, grinning.

And as Tyler handed her the note with the instructions, Maya realized something: the real drama wasn't the spying or the secrets. It was this feeling—of being on the edge of something huge, of being chosen, of being exactly where she was supposed to be.

Summer was just getting started.
