Poolside Riddles

The chlorine smell hit Maya first—that sharp, chemical scent that screamed 'public pool.' She clutched her towel like a safety blanket, heart doing somersaults. Not the cool kind. The 'I'm about to throw up' kind.

"You coming in or what?" yelled Tyler from the water, that classic bull-headed jock who'd made freshman year miserable. His friends laughed like they were in on some cosmic joke she wasn't privileged enough to understand.

Zombie mode: activate. That's what Maya called it—that numb autopilot where you fake smile and nod and literally cannot die of social awkwardness because you're already dead inside. She'd been running on fumes since finals week.

Her phone buzzed. Mom: 'How's the party? 😊'

Maya typed back: 'Great! Swimming now!' Reality: still standing on deck in full clothes while Tyler and his squad splashed around like overgrown golden retrievers.

That's when she noticed it—the rusted goldfish bowl sitting on a picnic table nearby. Some carnival prize from ages ago, probably abandoned after the novelty wore off. The fish inside kept doing the same laps, back and forth, back and forth, like it had forgotten why it started swimming in the first place.

Damn. That hit close to home.

"Hey, you're Maya, right?"

She jumped. A girl with rainbow-streaked hair and galaxy paint on her fingernails sat cross-legged on the bench beside the goldfish bowl. Maya recognized her from art club—what was her name? Sarah? Skylar? Something with S.

"Your sketchbook's sick," the girl continued. "I saw you drawing during lunch. The way you capture light? It's giving renaissance artist energy."

Maya blinked. Compliments from cool people were not in today's forecast.

"I'm Sasha, by the way. Also, Tyler's being a jerk because he failed math and is projecting his insecurities onto everyone else. Classic toxic behavior."

Maya snorted before she could stop herself.

"See? You have a laugh. That's good." Sasha nodded sagely like she'd just unlocked some secret achievement. "Want to hear something weird? My grandpa has this statue of a sphinx in his garden, and sometimes when I can't figure stuff out, I sit there and pretend it's testing me with riddles. Helps me think."

"That's... actually kind of profound?"

"Right? Like, what's the deal with everyone pretending they've got it together? We're all just goldfish in a bowl, swimming around and hoping somebody remembers to feed us."

The sun broke through the clouds just then, catching Sasha's hair like she was some kind of magical creature herself. Maya felt something shift in her chest, light and unexpected.

"You know what?" Maya said, dropping her towel on the bench. "I think I will go swimming."

"Bet." Sasha grinned. "Race you to the deep end."

Maya dove in, chlorine burning her eyes, and for the first time all year, the zombie fog lifted. She was just a girl in a pool, swimming toward something new, and that was enough.
