Poolside Riddles
The hotel pool shimmered like liquid mercury under the desert moon, and Elena swam laps with the grim determination of someone trying to outpace her own thoughts. Two weeks ago, she'd found long dark hair on her husband's pillow—hair that wasn't hers. Now she was at this corporate retreat, watching Marcus laugh with his colleagues, his hand lingering too long on the small of Sophia's back.
They called her The Sphinx around the office. Sophia gave nothing away, her expression carved from something ancient and impenetrable. She asked questions that felt like riddles, gathered secrets like offerings. Elena had dismissed the warnings about Sophia being a corporate spy, hired by a competitor to poach their clients. Now she wondered.
"You're going to wear a hole in the water," said a voice behind her. Elena surfaced to find Sophia sitting poolside, legs dangling in the water, pale hair loose around her shoulders. "Your husband has been asking about the merger timeline."
"Marcus? He wouldn't—he doesn't have clearance."
"People find ways." Sophia's smile was thin. "The hair on your pillow. Was it long? Dark?"
Elena's blood turned to ice. "You knew."
"I know everything worth knowing." Sophia slid into the water with graceful precision. "Your husband is sleeping with three women from the mergers and acquisitions team. He's gathering information for his new employer. The hair you found belonged to his source at the SEC."
Elena couldn't breathe. "Why tell me?"
"Because I'm not the spy you think I am." Sophia's gaze sharpened, something almost human beneath the layers of calculation. "I'm your competition's head of recruitment. And I'd rather hire you than him."
The water around them suddenly felt very cold. Elena watched Marcus across the pool, still laughing, still touching, completely unaware that his wife had just been offered the very position he'd been betraying her to obtain.
"What's the riddle," Elena asked, "that has no answer?"
Sophia smiled, really smiled. "'Why did I ever trust him?' Now, get out of this pool. We have paperwork to sign."
