Poolside Riddles

Elena swam laps at midnight, the apartment complex pool her only sanctuary. Her marriage had been dissolving for months—quiet, relentless, like erosion. No explosions, just the slow wearing away of everything that once felt solid.

The new neighbor watched her from the balcony above. She'd seen him only in fragments: a silhouette against the light, the occasional glint of glasses. Enigmatic, unreadable. Like the sphinx, he seemed to know things he wouldn't speak.

Tonight, she found him sitting poolside when she surfaced, gasping. A stray cat curled at his feet—a sleek black thing that regarded her with ancient judgment.

"You swim like you're fleeing something," he said.

Elena wrapped herself in a towel, her heart hammering. "Just thinking."

"Your husband hired me." His voice was flat, matter-of-fact. "Three weeks ago. He thinks you're having an affair."

The cat stood, stretched, and wound between her legs. The blood drained from Elena's face. "You're a private investigator?"

"Corporate spy, mostly. But the economy's rough."

She laughed, bitter and incredulous. "And?"

"And I haven't found any evidence of an affair." He paused. "But I did find something else."

She waited.

"He's the one having the affair. Has been for six months. With your sister."

The silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating. The pool's surface reflected moonlight like broken glass.

"Why tell me?"

The man stood, the cat following him toward the stairs. "Even sphinxes have their limits. Some riddles shouldn't be solved."

Elena sat alone at the edge of the pool, her feet in the water, and understood suddenly that some truths don't set you free—they just leave you drowning in the deep end where no one can see you struggle.
