Poolside Revelation

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her ridiculous oversized sun hat like a shield. The orange one-piece she'd bought on impulse felt way too bright, way too visible, especially compared to everyone else's perfectly curated Instagram aesthetic.

"Yo, Maya! You coming in or what?" Tyler called from the water, droplets running through his messy brown hair.

Her chest tightened. Swimming meant revealing everything she'd been hiding since seventh grade—when her hair started falling out in clumps and the beanies became permanent fixtures. But this was Tyler's sweet sixteen, and she'd promised herself she'd stop letting fear call the shots.

She set the hat on the lounge chair, heart hammering against her ribs. First step: just get in the water.

Someone wolf-whistled. "Nice orange!"

Maya's face burned. But then she heard laughter—genuine, not mean-girl cackling.

"For real though," said Brianna, the girl whose hair always looked effortless, "it's actually sick. You're glowing out here."

Glowing. Maybe from the sun, maybe from the nervous sweat, but she'd take it.

Maya slipped into the pool, cool water wrapping around her like a second skin. She surfaced to find Tyler waiting, treading water with that easy grin that made her stomach do backflips.

"There she is," he said. "Thought we lost you to Hat Land forever."

She splashed him. He splashed back, and suddenly it wasn't about the hair loss or the orange swimsuit or who was watching. It was just water and laughter and the way Tyler's eyes caught the sunlight when he laughed.

By the time they ordered pizza, Maya's hat remained on the chair, forgotten. She ran a hand through her patchy hair, not caring who saw. The orange swimsuit wasn't a mistake anymore—it was armor.

"Same time next week?" Tyler asked, drying his hair with a towel that matched her swimsuit.

Maya smiled, really smiled, for the first time in months. "Bet."

Some things don't fix themselves. But sometimes, all it takes is one orange swimsuit and a boy who sees you anyway.
