Poolside Resurrection

I dragged myself to the community pool like a zombie, brain still mush from finals week. The papaya-colored swim trunks my mom bought me as a 'confidence boost' weren't helping. Neither was the fact that my crush was already there, looking flawless in a bikini while I rocked the aesthetic of a exhausted produce aisle.

"Sup, Caleb!" Jace called from the deep end. "Wanna play water baseball?"

I hesitated. Last time I tried sports, I'd face-planted during kickball and walked like I'd been riding a horse for a week.

"Actually," Maya's voice floated over from the shallow end, "we need a fourth for padel. You know how to play?"

I didn't. But her eyes locked on mine like I was the only person at the pool who mattered. So I lied.

"Totally. I'm basically a pro."

Ten minutes later, I stood on the court, clutching a borrowed racket like my life depended on it. Sweat trickled down my spine. Maya's brother served, and I swung wildly at the air, momentum carrying me straight into the net.

The collective gasp from the spectators. Maya's hands covering her mouth. The absolute destruction of my dignity.

But then—she started laughing. Not the mean-girl laugh I'd expected, but this genuine, contagious thing that made her eyes crinkle.

"Okay, that was actually iconic," she said, helping me untangle from the net. "You're terrible, but like, in the most entertaining way possible."

We spent the afternoon together. She taught me actual padel technique. I learned she was failing math and scared to tell her parents. We shared papaya slices from her cooler and talked about everything and nothing.

"Your trunks aren't that bad," she said as the sun began to set. "They're growing on me."

I walked home no longer feeling like a zombie. Something about humiliation, honesty, and papaya-colored shorts had somehow made me feel more alive than I had in months.
