Poolside Reconnaissance
Maya clutched her iPhone like a lifeline, the screen glowing with the invite she'd been waiting for all summer. "Pool party @ Jake's, 7pm. 😏"
She'd been practicing her cannonball for weeks. Maya was usually the girl reading by the deep end, but tonight? Tonight she was gonna be *main character energy*.
"You're actually going?" Chloe asked, painting her nails electric blue. "Last time, you spent two hours in the bathroom because 'the humidity was messing with your aesthetic.'"
"This time is different."
The party was already popping. Jake's backyard looked like a teen movie—twinkling lights, bodies everywhere, music thumping. Maya felt like she'd stepped into an alternate universe.
She positioned herself near the snack table, iPhone ready for field research. *Spying on the popular kids to understand their secrets,* she told herself.
That's when she saw him. Liam from calculus, clutching a red solo cup like it contained poison. His eyes darted around like he was casing the joint for an FBI raid.
Maya watched him inch toward the pool, testing the water with one toe like it was lava. Then he pulled out his iPhone and started typing furiously.
She angled her phone like a selfie but zoomed in on his screen: *Group chat: "Jake's party is a 3/10. Can we leave yet?"*
Maya snort-laughed. Liam spun around, spotted her, and his face went from terror to relief.
"You think this is awful too?" he mouthed across the deck.
She nodded. He made his way over, dodging a splash war.
"I've been hiding behind this snack table for twenty minutes," he whispered. "I only came because my mom said I need to 'work on my social presence.' What about you?"
"Honestly? I'm doing reconnaissance on the popular kids. For science."
Liam grinned, his nose crinkling. "We should form an alliance. I've got intel on where Jake's dad hides the good sodas."
"Deal."
They spent the rest of the night making up backstories for everyone they spied on through iPhone cameras. The cheerleaders were alien scouts. Jake's little sister was an undercover operative. Maya's stomach hurt from laughing.
"Wait," Maya said around 10pm. "Are we... hanging out? Like, on purpose?"
Liam shrugged, looking at her through his lashes. "I mean, you're the only person here who appreciates a good conspiracy theory. And you didn't make fun of me for almost falling in."
Maya's heart did this weird fluttery thing that didn't feel like lying for once. "I think that's the nicest thing anyone's said to me all summer."
They sat there until Jake's mom started shutting everything down, watching the pool lights reflect off the water. Maya's iPhone died around midnight, but she didn't even care.
"So," Liam said as they walked to their bikes. "There's this back-to-school thing at the community center next week..."
Maya smiled so wide her face hurt. "I'll bring my spy gear."
She floated home on a cloud. Sometimes the best parties weren't the ones where you fit in—they were the ones where you found your people.
And okay, maybe she'd practice that cannonball anyway. Just in case.
