Poolside Recon Mission
The water shimmered like liquid diamonds under the July sun, but Maya's stomach felt like it was doing backflips. Taylor's pool party. The social event of the summer according to Instagram stories, and Maya had actually been invited.
She adjusted her orange bikini for the hundredth time, suddenly regretting the bold color choice. Everyone else seemed so comfortable in their skin, while she felt like she was wearing a costume that didn't quite fit.
"Maya! Finally!" Taylor waved from the diving board, surrounded by her squad of effortlessly cool friends. "Get in here! The water's perfect!"
Maya forced a smile and slid into the pool, the cool shock temporarily drowning out her anxiety. She'd spent weeks cyber-spying on Taylor's feed, memorizing her interests, her inside jokes, her friend group dynamics. Pathetic? Maybe. Necessary? Definitely.
Then she saw him—Jake from chemistry, looking unexpectedly adorable without his usual hoodie collection. He was swimming laps with the kind of focused intensity that made her Instagram stalking of him feel suddenly very real.
"Hey, chemistry partner," Jake said, surfacing right beside her.
Maya's brain short-circuited. This was NOT in the recon data.
"Hey," she managed, voice cracking slightly. Smooth. "You're... actually swimming. Like, for real."
He laughed, water droplets catching on his eyelashes. "Coach says I need more endurance. What about you? Hiding in the shallow end?"
"Strategic positioning," she countered, feeling oddly brave. "Best people-watching spot."
His grin was doing things to her heart rate that had nothing to do with summer heat. "Wanna show me your recon technique? I've been wanting to talk to you anyway."
Maya's social anxiety went offline for exactly three seconds before rebooting with upgraded confidence. Sometimes the best spy missions aren't the ones you plan.
