Poolside Recon Mission

I became a spy without even meaning to. It started when I hid behind the oversized planters at the community pool, desperate to avoid anyone seeing my pale, out-of-shape self in swim trunks. But from my tactical position, I could see everything.

Marcus—the guy I'd been lowkey crushing on since seventh grade—was playing chicken fight in the water with his friends. His orange swim shorts glowed against the blue pool like he was some kind of sun god. Meanwhile, I was a coward ghosting the hottest day of July.

Then my older brother's dog—this chaotic golden retriever named Buster—came sprinting through the gate, leash trailing behind him like a streamer. Someone had left the gate open again. Buster had one mission: find water.

He launched himself into the pool with zero hesitation, creating a wave that capsized Marcus and sent half the party-goers tumbling. Everyone was laughing, splashing, pulling the wet, shaking dog toward the edge. It was chaos. Perfect, beautiful chaos.

And that's when I realized Marcus was looking right at me—still hiding behind my planters like a total weirdo. He waved me over, grinning. 'Hey! Your brother's dog is legendary!'

I stood there frozen, running through about fifteen reasons why I couldn't join them. My stomach did that awful flippy thing it always did when attention landed on me.

But then Buster shook himself off directly next to Marcus, spraying him with dog-scented pool water, and Marcus just laughed harder.

I walked over.

'Your dog's my new best friend,' Marcus said, handing me a towel. 'Though I'm pretty sure he just ruined my phone.'

'I can pay for it—'

'Chill, I was kidding.' He nudged my shoulder. 'You coming in or what?'

The water looked terrifying. So did all the people watching. But Marcus was still smiling, waiting for my answer like it actually mattered.

I jumped in. The shock of cold water was better than spying from the sidelines any day.
