Poolside Recon Mission
Maya adjusted her sunglasses for the third time, sure they'd somehow become crooked since the last check. The reflection showed her best attempt at chill — oversized white tee over bikini, hair in deliberately messy waves. But inside? Total freaking chaos.
Liam was ten feet away. Baseball captain Liam, who'd smiled at her in the hallway last Tuesday. Who'd somehow become the sole focus of her entire summer.
"You're literally being a spy right now," Kae whispered, cracking up. "But like, a bad one. You've been staring for ten minutes straight."
Maya flipped her off. "It's called reconnaissance. Get it right."
Liam was standing near the snack table, laughing with his friends. His hair was wet from the pool, droplets running down his neck. Maya felt kind of pathetic, honestly. This whole summer had been one long exercise in overthinking every interaction, every possible scenario, every text she could send but didn't.
Then someone knocked into the table behind her, and suddenly she was stumbling forward. Straight toward Liam.
Time did that thing where it slowed down. She saw him turn. Saw his eyebrows go up. Saw her own trajectory like some terrible physics problem she was about to fail.
"Whoa, you good?" His hand caught her arm, steadying her. Up close, he smelled like chlorine and coconut sunscreen.
"Yeah, totally," she managed, her voice coming out weirdly high. "Just... graceful over here."
He laughed. And not the mean kind. The genuine one.
Someone passed him a plastic cup. "Want some papaya? It's actually fire."
Maya stared at the orange fruit chunks like they were radioactive. "Uh, never tried it."
"You're kidding, right?" Liam held one out. "Your life's about to change."
She took it. His fingers brushed hers, just for a second. Her stomach did this absolutely humiliating little flip.
The papaya was... unexpected. Sweet, kind of musky, with seeds that looked weirdly gross but tasted amazing. She didn't hate it.
"See?" Liam grinned. "Told you."
She took another bite, suddenly feeling like she was in a commercial for something. Summer afternoons and new experiences and boys who smelled like pool water and expensive sunscreen.
"Yeah," Maya said, not trusting herself to say more. "Not bad."
Later, when she and Kae were walking home, dripping water onto the sidewalk, Kae was unrelenting. "You talked to him for like, twenty minutes. You shared exotic fruit. This was a success."
Maya thought about how papaya seeds looked weird but tasted incredible. About how sometimes things weren't what you expected. About how Liam had genuinely laughed at her terrible jokes.
"Maybe," she said, and the sun was still warm on her skin, and maybe this summer wasn't going to be so terrible after all.
