Poolside Recon Mission
The invitation had said casual pool party, but Maya stood at the edge of the chain-link fence like she was about to breach enemy territory. She'd been Jordan's best friend since fourth grade, but somehow they'd ended up in completely different orbits freshman year. Jordan wasVarsity now, while Maya was still finding her social coordinates.
Through the fence, she spotted it — a giant inflatable bear floating in the pool like some ridiculous party mascot. Someone had obviously raided the decoration store after graduation.
"You gonna stand there all day or actually come inside?"
Maya jumped. Marcus, Jordan's older brother, leaned against the gate, grinning. He held out an orange slice. "Peace offering?"
She took it, trying to look casual. "I was just... appreciating the aesthetic."
"The bear?" Marcus laughed. "Mom won it at some grocery store contest. Jordan's been trying to make it look cool all afternoon. It's not working."
The bear bobbed dramatically as someone did a cannonball nearby.
Inside the yard, the party was in full swing. Jordan caught Maya's eye and waved — almost too enthusiastically. Maya felt that familiar pinch in her chest. Jordan was trying to include her, but the effort was visible. Nothing was natural anymore.
Then she noticed it — Jordan kept glancing toward the pool house, where Tyler from the baseball team was talking to some seniors. Every time he laughed, Jordan's face did this complicated thing where she tried to look indifferent and failed spectacularly.
Oh.
Maya wasn't just socially awkward; she was a spy now. This was intel.
She grabbed Marcus's arm. "Operation: Don't Be Awkward. I need backup."
Marcus raised an eyebrow. "What's the mission?"
"Jordan likes Tyler, and she's about to spontaneously combust from nerves. We need to orchestrate a casual interaction or she's gonna lose it."
Marcus considered this, then nodded. "I've been waiting years to return all the times she's embarrassed me. Let's do it."
Twenty minutes later, Marcus "accidentally" knocked Tyler's drink into the pool. While everyone scrambled, Maya positioned Jordan perfectly to "help" him fish it out. Their hands brushed. They laughed. The bear floated judgmentally nearby.
Later, as the party wound down and the sun painted everything gold, Jordan found Maya sitting on the back porch steps.
"You did that, didn't you?" Jordan asked, but she was smiling.
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Maya said. "I'm just here for the orange slices."
Jordan hugged her so suddenly Maya almost tipped over her soda. "You're the worst spy ever."
"That's why you keep me around."
The bear had deflated somewhat by then, lopsided and drooping. It looked better that way.
