Poolside Recon Mission
The chlorine smell hit me before I even saw the water. Community pool, first day on the job, and I was already sweating through my staff tee. Meanwhile, everyone from school was hanging out on the patio — Tyler's squad posted up by the diving board like they owned the place.
I ducked behind the concession stand, whipped out my iPhone, and refreshed Instagram for the fiftieth time. Nothing. No DMs, no tags, just Leo posting stories from some beach in Cape Cod with his cool aunt. Meanwhile, I was stuck playing lifeguard-spy, watching seventh graders run on wet concrete and mentally drafting incident reports that nobody would read.
"Yo, Marcus!"
I jumped, nearly dropping my phone in the deep end. It was Chelsea, wearing those oversized sunglasses everyone had. "You working or what? Tyler's about to do a backflip off the high dive. You gonna be a buzzkill or chill?"
"I'm literally getting paid to be a buzzkill," I said, but my voice cracked. Classic.
Chelsea laughed, but not mean. "Whatever. Just don't blow the whistle on me, I'm skipping practice."
Suddenly, something moving near the fence line caught my eye. Not a person. Not a dog.
A bear. An actual freaking bear, lumbering along the tree line like it was just out for a Sunday stroll.
My brain short-circuited. Was this real? Should I blow the whistle? Scream? Post it first and ask questions later? (Spoiler: that last one was definitely the wrong call, but my thumbs moved faster than my survival instincts).
By the time the bear lost interest and wandered back toward the woods, half the pool was filming. Tyler's backflip was forgotten. My DMs were blowing up. Chelsea was grinning at me like I'd just won the lottery.
"Okay, that was actually kinda legendary," she said. "You coming to the bonfire tonight?"
Maybe I wasn't invisible after all. Maybe the only thing worse than being the spy on the sidelines was never being part of the story.
"Yeah," I said. "I think I am."
And that's how I learned: sometimes the most legendary moments happen when you look up from your phone.
