Poolside Recon
Maya's palms were sweating. Literally sweating. Which was unfortunate, because she was supposed to be casually holding her phone while texting her best friend about her five-step plan to finally talk to Alex at Jordan's pool party. Step one: position yourself near the snack table but not so near that it looks like you're camping there. Step two: look effortless.
"You're literally staring at the papaya like it's gonna solve your life problems," whispered Kai, materializing beside her with a mischievous grin. "Also, your spy game is weak. Alex definitely saw you checking him out three times already."
Maya rolled her eyes. "First of all, I'm analyzing the fruit arrangement. Second, I'm not a spy. I'm conducting reconnaissance. There's a difference."
"Sure, James Bond. Whatever helps you sleep at night." Kai grabbed a papaya wedge. "You know what would help? Actually talking to him instead of orchestrating this whole tactical operation like you're infiltrating Area 51."
The pool area was getting crowded - Jordan's parents had gone all out with the tropical theme, complete with actual palm trees that kept dropping stray fronds into the water. Someone's little brother was currently trying to fish one out with a pool noodle while everyone pretended not to notice.
"What if he thinks I'm weird?" Maya said quietly. "What if he's like, 'why does this girl keep looking at me and then looking away like I'm Medusa?'"
"Then he's not worth it." Kai bumped her shoulder. "Also, you are weird. But like, in a good way. The kind of way that someone who really appreciates papaya would be into."
Maya snorted. "You're terrible at pep talks."
"I'm your best friend. That's literally in the job description." Kai checked their phone. "Oh, heads up. He's coming over here. Probably for more fruit, but this is your moment. I believe in you. Also, I'm gonna go investigate whether those are actually real palm trees or just really good props. Good luck!"
And then Kai was gone, abandoning her to face Alex alone as he approached the snack table, his chlorine-damp hair falling in that way that made her brain short-circuit. Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. She could do this. She had a five-step plan. Sort of.
"Hey," Alex said, grabbing a bottle of water. "You're Maya, right? From English?"
She opened her mouth, palms suddenly sweaty again, and somehow what came out was: "I like your papaya. I MEAN the papaya. I like papaya. The fruit. In general."
Alex laughed. Not a mean laugh. A genuine one. "Same honestly. It's underrated. Most people here are all about the watermelon but I think papaya's the real MVP."
Across the pool, Maya caught Kai's eye and gave a tiny thumbs up. Her spy skills might need work, but somehow, incredibly, she hadn't blown it yet.
