Poolside Pyramids

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her orange towel like a shield. The invitation said "casual pool hang" but the scene before her suggested something else entirely. The social pyramid at Carson's house was in full effect, and Maya had definitely landed somewhere near the base.

Tiffany, the undisputed queen of sophomore year, held court poolside on a lounge chair that looked suspiciously like a throne. Her perfectly curated Instagram story was probably already live, capturing the golden-hour lighting and her supposedly effortless beauty. Maya adjusted the straps of her orange bikini—it had seemed like a good choice at Target, but now it felt too bright, too attention-grabbing, too everything.

"Eyes up, new girl," someone whispered beside her. It was Chloe, a girl from her English class who'd somehow also ended up at the social fringe of this party. "The pyramid's steep here. Watch your step."

Maya let out a small laugh. "Thanks. I'm still learning who's who."

"That's Tyler over there," Chloe pointed discreetly. "Total wannabe influencer. And that's Jason with the perpetual blue hair. He thinks he's emo, but he's just rich."

Inside the house, the kitchen was even worse. A literal pyramid of red Solo cups towered on the counter, and Carson was holding court about some "revolutionary" protein powder his uncle was selling. Maya rolled her eyes so hard it actually hurt. Classic pyramid scheme energy at a high school pool party.

"You swimming?" Chloe asked. "I'd be down if you wanted to, but I'm also cool with staying right here and judging everyone."

"I'm not really a pool person," Maya admitted. "I don't know why I came. My aunt made me. Said I need to 'put myself out there' or whatever."

"Valid," Chloe nodded. "I'd honestly rather be swimming alone at the YMCA than dealing with this performance art."

Suddenly, Carson's voice cut through the ambient noise. "Yo guys, my uncle's startup is literally gonna be bigger than Tesla. You get in now, you're basically set for life. It's called CryptoFit—you stake your workout tokens and—"

"Bro, that's straight-up bull," Jason called out, launching himself off the diving board with a dramatic cannonball. The splash sent water everywhere, dousing several people near the edge.

Maya and Chloe exchanged a look, and for the first time all night, Maya felt genuinely amused. The social pyramid was more fragile than it looked.

"Wanna go see if Carson's parents have any snacks that aren't weird protein bars?" Chloe suggested.

"Absolutely," Maya said, dropping her orange towel on a chair. "Let's raid their pantry."

They headed inside, leaving behind the performative poolside drama. Maya had come expecting to feel small at the bottom of the pyramid, but somehow, she'd found something better: a real connection at the edges, where things were actually interesting.
