Poolside Pyramid Scheme

The first time I saw the pyramid, it was just a bunch of red Solo cups stacked by the diving board at Miller's pool. Kyle—the senior who threw parties that made everyone's weekend—was standing next to it like he'd invented gravity itself.

"It's simple," Kyle said, flipping his wet hair. "You bring two friends, they bring two friends, suddenly everyone's part of the pyramid. Top tier gets VIP, bottom tier... well, you're still in."

I'd been waiting for this moment since freshman year. The pool party where everything would change, where I'd finally be someone instead of the girl who sat alone at lunch. The pyramid was my ticket in.

I grabbed my phone and started texting people I barely knew. Come to Miller's pool, I typed. It's gonna be legendary. My thumbs moved fast, desperate. Each person I recruited felt like a win, like I was climbing higher.

Then I felt something brush against my leg.

It was a cat—this mangy, orange tabby that must've wandered in from the neighborhood. It looked at me with these bored, half-closed eyes like it knew something I didn't.

"You're trying too hard," my brain whispered, and it sounded weirdly like the cat.

I looked at the pyramid of cups again. Looked at Kyle laughing with his friends, not even noticing me. Looked at the three people I'd dragged here, each looking just as lost and hopeful as I felt. The whole thing was ridiculous. We were all scrambling over each other to stand at the top of something that didn't even exist.

I put my phone in my pocket. Walked over to the pool's edge, where the water was still and the night air was finally cooling down. The cat followed, curling up on the concrete like it owned the place.

"Hey," someone said. I turned—this girl from my history class, Maya. "Wanna just... hang out here? Away from the pyramid?"

I sat down. She sat down. The orange cat purred between us like it had planned everything.

"Yeah," I said. "I'd like that."

Behind us, the pyramid of cups toppled over. Nobody noticed.
