Poolside Pyramid Scheme

pyramidpoolspy

Maya's Texts blew up with twelve notifications before first period. The Friday night pool party at Chloe's was happening, and everyone who was anyone would be there. Including seniors. Including Liam.

But Maya wasn't anyone. She was stuck in the middle **pyramid** of Roosevelt High's social structure—not popular enough to sit at the senior table, not invisible enough to escape notice entirely. Just... there. Hovering.

"You coming?" Jenna asked, sliding into the desk beside her. Jenna, who existed comfortably at pyramid base level with zero interest in climbing. Maya envied her sometimes.

"Chloe didn't invite me."

"So? It's a pool party. Not the Met Gala." Jenna flipped her hair. "Just show up. I'll be your wingwoman."

That's how Maya found herself Friday night standing outside Chloe's sprawling house, heart hammering against her ribs. The **pool** glowed with underwater lights, a turquoise oasis surrounded by too-cool seniors in swimsuits that cost more than Maya's entire wardrobe. Music thumped from speakers somewhere. Laughter bounced off the patio furniture.

She'd barely made it past the gate when someone knocked into her, splashing water onto her sandals. "Watch it—"

"Maya?" A boy's voice. Familiar. Tyler, from her AP Bio class. Not a senior, but he somehow moved freely through these circles like he belonged. His dark curls were wet, dripping onto shoulders that had definitely gotten broader over summer. When did that happen?

"Oh my god, sorry!" Chloe materialized behind him, cheeks flushed. "Maya, I'm so glad you came! Tyler, babe, did you invite her?"

Maya's stomach did this little flip. Tyler had invited her? To this exclusive, pyramid-topping gathering?

"Course." He shot her a grin that was equal parts charming and mysterious. "Told her about that Bio study group thing."

But his eyes said something else. Something like: I've got a secret.

Over the next hour, Maya noticed things. Tyler kept disappearing—"bathroom" or "getting drinks"—but then she'd catch him near the side gate, phone pressed to his ear, speaking in low urgent tones. Chloe remained oblivious, posting Instagram stories of their "perfect" relationship.

And when Maya followed him outside, genuinely curious about his sudden weird behavior, she heard him through the cracked door: "No, Dad, I'm not watching her. I'm at a party. This is **spy** work, not babysitting. I'm sixteen, not twelve—"

He spotted Maya. Frozen.

"You're... spying on someone?" she whispered.

Tyler dragged her behind the pool house. "My dad's a private investigator. He thinks Chloe's dad is embezzling from his company. He's paying me to gather intel. I'm not even supposed to like her."

Maya's mind spun. The social pyramid, the carefully curated relationship, the perfect party—all fake. Tyler wasn't climbing the hierarchy. He was dismantling it from the inside.

"Does Chloe know?"

"No one knows." His eyes searched hers. "Except you now."

They stood there in the soft pool light, two people pretending to be something they weren't. And maybe that was enough of a connection to build something real on.

"Tomorrow," Maya said quietly, "want to study for that Bio test? For real this time?"

Tyler smiled. Something genuine. "Yeah. Yeah, I do."

The pyramid kept spinning above them. But somehow, standing there in the damp heat with chlorine in the air and secret knowledge between them, Maya felt like she'd finally found her level.
