Poolside Pyramid Scheme

Maya's thumbs hovered over her iPhone screen, the blue light making her palms sweat. Three notifications. *Come to Tyler's pool party!!!* *Everyone's gonna be there* *Plz come Maya*.

She hadn't gone swimming since the incident last summer — the belly flop heard 'round the neighborhood. But this was junior year. She couldn't keep hiding in her room while her friends lived their best lives.

The pool party was already in full swing when she arrived. Tyler's backyard smelled like chlorine and coconut sunscreen. In the deep end, a group of guys were constructing a human pyramid, laughing as someone at the top kept wobbling.

"Maya!" Tyler waved from the pool edge. "We need one more for the pyramid!"

"No thanks," she called back. "Just watching."

"Come on!" It was Jason — the guy she'd been lowkey crushing on since geometry. "Don't be a chicken."

Maya's stomach twisted. Last time she'd tried something like this, she'd face-planted and everyone had live-streamed it. But Jason was grinning at her, and his hair was wet and perfect, and suddenly she was slipping off her cover-up.

The water was cold against her skin. She swam to the deep end where the guys were rebuilding their formation. "Okay, but if I drown, I'm haunting everyone."

"You're in good hands," Jason winked. "Just grab onto my shoulders."

Their first attempt collapsed immediately. Someone's bull-headed determination to make it work kept them trying. By attempt four, Maya was breathless and laughing so hard she couldn't see straight.

"One more time!" Tyler shouted. "Maya, you're up top this time. You're lightest."

Jason cupped his hands. "Step right here. We've got you."

She hesitated. All those old insecurities bubbled up — what if she fell? What if she looked stupid? But Jason's eyes were steady, and beneath his cocky grin, he seemed nervous too.

She stepped up. Their hands linked together, forming a chain of support. They swayed, wobbled, and for one heart-stopping moment, Maya thought she'd tumble. Then something shifted — they found their balance.

"We did it!" someone shouted.

Maya sat perched at the top of their human pyramid, grinning like an idiot while her iPhone sat abandoned on a lounge chair, forgotten. The real connection was happening right here, wet and messy and imperfect.

Later, as they all sat poolside eating pizza, Jason slid next to her. "That was actually kinda brave, what you did."

"Please," Maya rolled her eyes. "I almost fell like seven times."

"But you didn't." He bumped her shoulder with his. "Maybe next time we can aim higher?"

"Let's not get crazy," she laughed. "But... maybe."

Her phone buzzed with incoming texts, but Maya didn't check it. She was too busy watching the sunset reflect off the pool, feeling lighter than she had in months.
