Poolside Pyramid Scheme
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. The water sparkled with that perfect Instagram-filter blue, but her stomach twisted in knots. This wasn't just any Saturday—it was Chloe's pool party, and Chloe was at the top of the social pyramid at Northwood High. The invitation list had been carefully curated like a museum exhibit.
"You coming in or what?"
Maya jumped. It was Leo, the guy from her AP Bio class who sat in the back and drew anime characters in his notebook. He was already waist-deep in the water, dripping wet and surprisingly confident.
"Yeah, just...," Maya started, but then she heard Chloe's voice cutting through the splashy chaos.
"OMG, you guys, I have to tell you about this amazing opportunity," Chloe was saying, her voice rising an octave. Maya had heard this tone before—usually right before someone tried to sell her something. "It's literally life-changing. My cousin's friend's sister made three thousand dollars last month just posting on social media."
Maya slipped into the pool with a quiet splash, watching from the safety of the water as Chloe held court on the deck. Four girls sat cross-legged around her, hanging on every word like it was gospel.
"It's called LuxeLife," Chloe continued, pulling out her phone with a perfectly manicured hand. "You start as a Brand Ambassador, then work your way up to Diamond Elite. My upline says I could be driving a Tesla by graduation."
Maya swam closer to the edge, where Leo was floating on his back, staring at the ceiling.
"Is she... is she pitching a pyramid scheme?" Maya whispered.
Leo cracked one eye open. "At every party since March. She's got half the sophomore class selling those overpriced vitamin gummies now."
Something in Maya snapped. Maybe it was the chlorine fumes, maybe it was the way Chloe's followers looked like they'd drink actual poison if she said it was trendy. But Maya climbed out of the pool, water streaming down her legs, and marched over to Chloe's circle.
"Hey, Chloe?" she said, her voice shaking only a little. "My sister's in business school. She looked up LuxeLife. It's a classic pyramid scheme—you only make money if you recruit people, not from selling actual product. The FTC literally has a warning about this exact setup."
The circle went dead silent. Chloe's perfect smile froze.
"Whatever," Chloe said, flipping her hair. "You're just jealous because you're not on the fast track to financial freedom."
"No," Maya said, surprised by her own steadiness. "I'm just not on the fast track to losing all my friends' money. Besides, if it's so legit, why do you have to recruit us at a pool party?"
Someone giggled. Then someone else. Within seconds, the whole group was laughing, and Chloe's face was turning the color of a overheated smartphone.
Maya dove back into the pool, swimming beneath the surface until her lungs burned. When she popped up, Leo was grinning at her.
"That was legendary," he said. "You just dismantled the pyramid."
"Whatever," Maya said, but she was smiling too. For the first time since freshman year, she didn't feel like she was drowning in shallow water.
