Poolside Pyramid Scheme
The **water** in the Thompsons' pool sparkled like liquid diamonds, but Maya's stomach did nervous backflips. This wasn't just any Saturday — it was THE party, the one that would determine her social standing for sophomore year.
Her neon **orange** bikini felt too loud, too desperate. Across the pool, the popular girls sat in their designated chairs like royalty holding court. They'd nicknamed their friend group "The **Pyramid**" because there was Jenna at the top, then her two besties, then everyone else orbiting below. Maya had spent the entire year trying to climb into that pyramid's base layer.
"Maya! CANNONBALL contest!" Jake shouted, splashing water everywhere. Jake, who'd somehow gone from acne-ridden freshman to surprisingly cute over summer break. Jake, whose golden retriever **dog** had once embarrassed Maya by pooping on her lawn during her quinceañera.
"You in?" Jake grinned, water dripping from his hair.
Maya glanced at The Pyramid. Jenna was watching, probably evaluating whether to grant Maya a +1 to her social credit score or deduct points for associating with Jake-the-former-loner.
"Maybe later," Maya called back weakly.
But then Jenna whispered something to her pyramid minions and they all laughed. Maya's face burned hotter than the July sun. She was literally standing at the edge of the pool, waiting for approval from people who'd probably forget her name by Monday.
Whatever. Sophomore year would be different.
"Actually," Maya said, turning to Jake with what she hoped was a confident smile, "bet I can beat you."
Jake's eyebrows shot up. "You're ON."
As they climbed onto the diving board, Maya caught Jenna watching again. But this time, Maya didn't care. Some pyramids were worth climbing. Others? You build your own.
