Poolside Pyramid Scheme

The chlorine hit Maya's nose like always, but today the pool deck felt different. Freshman year at Lincoln High, and she'd already learned that the cafeteria seating chart was basically a social pyramid scheme — varsity at the top, band kids in the middle, everyone else fighting for scraps.

"You swimming tonight?" Jenna asked, adjusting her goggles. Jenna was safe, middle tier, somehow friends with everyone.

"Yeah." Maya adjusted her own goggles, trying to look casual. "My mom says I need extracurriculars for college applications. Apparently 'existing' doesn't count."

Jenna laughed. "Facts. Coach says we're doing timed laps today. Good luck with that."

The bull of the swim team, Trevor, pushed past them like he owned the pool area. Senior, varsity jacket even in summer, that permanent smirk that screamed "I peaked in high school." He shoulder-checked Maya on purpose — classic move, really subtle.

"Watch it, freshie," he muttered.

Maya's face burned. She wanted to say something back, something cool and cutting, but what came out was: "Whatever, dude."

Weak. Jenna gave her a sympathetic look.

Coach Thompson blew the whistle. "Alright, pyramid drills today! Start with two laps, then four, then six. You know the deal."

The pyramid formation. Maya hated it — everyone could see exactly where you ranked in speed. Trevor, naturally, dominated lane one. Maya got stuck in lane six with the seventh graders who still used kickboards.

She pushed off the wall, water cascading around her. One lap, two laps. Her lungs burned, but she kept going. Somewhere between lap four and six, something clicked. The rhythm took over. Stroke, breathe, stroke, breathe. The cafeteria pyramid, Trevor's bull attitude, Jenna's safe middle ground — it all faded into the white noise of splashing water.

She touched the wall, gasping, and looked up at the clock.

"Damn, Maya!" Jenna high-fived her. "You just passed Trevor's time."

Trevor scowled from the next lane over. "Whatever. I wasn't trying."

"Salty," Maya said, surprising herself.

The pyramid was still there when she got out of the pool. Trevor was still a bull, and she was still a freshman trying to figure out where she fit. But for forty-five seconds, she'd been faster than him. Sometimes that was enough.

"Wanna get tacos after?" Jenna asked. "My treat."

Maya smiled, grabbing her towel. "Absolutely. Being faster than Trevor gives me an appetite."
