Poolside Pyramid Scheme
Maya stood at the edge of the **pool**, clutching her **iPhone** like a lifeline. The summer party was in full swing, and she felt completely out of place. Someone had brought actual **spinach** dip to a teenage pool party, which was honestly a mood in itself.
"Hey, you coming in?" Liam called from the water, doing that effortless cute-boy wave that made Maya's stomach do backflips. She'd been crushing on him since seventh period history, when he'd defended her choice to read graphic novels during free time.
"Maybe later," she managed, her voice coming out squeaky. Smooth.
Her phone buzzed. Unknown number: *"Want to make $500/week? Ask me how."* Ugh, another **pyramid** scheme targeting bored teenagers. Just what she needed – financial fraud to complement her social anxiety.
What nobody knew was that Maya had a secret mission tonight. She'd promised her best friend Chloe she'd **spy** on Tyler, who Chloe suspected was flirting with other girls. Being a teenage private investigator was not in her summer plans, but friendship required sacrifices.
Maya positioned herself near the snack table, conveniently close to where Tyler was holding court with his friends. She watched like a hawk while pretending to be deeply interested in the spinach dip (which was actually fire, whoever made it).
"Dude, stop acting like a total **spy**," someone whispered behind her. She jumped, nearly knocking over the chip bowl. It was Katie, the junior class president who somehow knew everyone's business.
"I'm not—"
"Chloe put you up to this, didn't she?" Katie raised an eyebrow. "Tyler's been cheating since freshman year. It's not exactly state secrets."
Maya felt like the biggest loser ever. Of course her best friend's relationship drama wasn't exactly CIA-level intel. She was just the awkward sophomore caught in the middle.
Her **iPhone** screen lit up again. Chloe: *"What did you find out??"*
Maya looked around at everyone laughing, swimming, flirting. This was what high school was supposed to be – not pyramid scheme messages, not spying duties, not standing alone by the spinach dip.
She texted Chloe back: *"Tyler's not worth it. Come swim."* Then she slipped off her flip-flops and jumped in the pool, phone safely on a chair. For the first time all night, she felt like she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
