Poolside Pyramid Disaster
I'd spent forty-five minutes straightening my hair that morning. First day of sophomore year, first pool party at Jake Thompson's house, and I was finally gonna make my move. The friend group had been circling each other all summer—me, Maria, Jake, and the rest of the crew—and this was it. The moment.
"You're doing the pyramid with us," Maria announced, sliding her sunglasses down her nose. "We need a base."
I glanced at the pool. The water glinted deceptively calm. "I don't cheer, though."
"It's not cheering, it's—social bonding. Jake's gonna be at the top."
Of course Jake would be at the top. Jake was always at the top of every pyramid, social or otherwise. My hair was already frizzing in the humidity. I should've said no.
Three minutes later, I'm in the pool, wedged between two juniors I barely know, holding up Maria, who's holding up Jake. My hair is plastered to my forehead. I can't breathe.
"ONE TWO THREE—" Jake yelled.
Maria slipped. Jake grabbed my shoulder for balance. I grabbed Maria's ankle. The whole thing collapsed in spectacular slow motion—a tangle of limbs, hair, and ego crashing into the water.
I came up sputtering. My hair was a disaster. My dignity was gone.
But then I saw Jake. His perfectly styled hair was dripping down his face. His snapback was floating toward the deep end. And he was laughing. Not mean laughing. Actual laughing.
"That was epic," he said, splashing water at me. "You okay down there?"
Maria surfaced beside me, grinning. "We're never living this down."
"Yeah," I said, wiping water from my eyes. "But at least we went down together."
Jake dove for his hat. Maria squeezed my shoulder. And in that moment, hair ruined and pool-soaked, I realized something about the social pyramid: the people worth climbing for are the ones who'll crash into the water with you.
Later that night, Maria texted me: Jake thought it was cool how I didn't make a big deal about falling. Some moments aren't about staying on top. They're about who's in the water when you hit bottom.
