Poolside Protocol
Maya stood at the edge of the pool party from hell, clutching her towel like a lifeline. The water sparkled mockingly below, filled with popular kids gliding like they owned the place. Meanwhile, she was basically drowning in social anxiety.
"Hey, aren't you gonna swim?" asked Jake, the cute lacrosse player she'd been lowkey stalking on Instagram for months. Maya's brain short-circuited.
"Yeah! Just warming up my... muscles," she lied smoothly. "Can't just dive in cold, you know?"
Jake nodded like she'd just shared some ancient swimming wisdom. "True. Hey, can you spy my sister? She said she'd bring her goldfish for show-and-tell tomorrow but I haven't seen her."
Goldfish? At a pool party? The popular kids were weird.
"I'll keep an eye out," Maya promised, immediately feeling like a creeper. She scanned the party like it was a covert operation. Behind her, someone screamed.
"OMG THE GOLDFISH!"
Maya turned to see a girl running toward the pool, clutching a plastic bag. Behind her, Jake's little sister chased her, sobbing. The girl with the bag—Bianca, queen of the sophomore class—tripped. The bag flew. Splash.
Everyone froze. The goldfish was now doing laps in the deep end.
Without thinking, Maya jumped in. Clothes and all. She swam to the bottom, fingers searching through the chaos of pool noodles and squirming bodies. Found it. She surfaced, holding the plastic bag like a prize.
"Got it," she gasped, water dripping everywhere. Jake's sister cheered. Bianca actually looked impressed. Jake was staring at her like she'd just saved the world.
"That was... legendary," he said, helping her out of the pool.
Maya stood there, soaked in her favorite sundress, hair plastered to her face, holding a rescued goldfish. And for the first time all night, she wasn't overthinking. She was just... present.
"Guess I'm swimming now," she said, and everyone laughed. Including her.
Sometimes the worst moments became the best stories. And maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of something actually real.
