Poolside Protocol
The orange bucket hat sat pulled low over Maya's eyes, her personal force field against the judgment of Taylor's backyard kingdom. Three months into freshman year and she still hadn't cracked the social code that made everything look effortless for everyone else.
"You gonna swim or just document?" called Josh, Taylor's older brother, already cannonballing into the pool with a splash that sent water droplets flying onto Maya's phone screen.
"Maybe later," she mumbled, thumbing through her vitamin gummies—the citrus ones her mom swore would help with "teen stress"—as if they were some kind of emotional armor. The cat, Taylor's annoyingly named Instagram sensation 'Mr. Whiskers', had been eyeing her from the patio railing like it knew something she didn't.
"Maya, stop lurking!" Taylor called from the deep end, doing that thing where she made everything look easy—hair still somehow perfect even while swimming. "We're playing sharks and minnows!"
The truth was, Maya loved swimming. She'd been on club teams since seventh grade, had the ribbons and the 6 AM practice discipline to prove it. But something about this pool party felt different. Performance pressure. The unspoken rule that you couldn't just swim—you had to perform swimming, make it look cool and casual and effortless all at once.
Mr. Whiskers jumped down from the railing, padding over to her chair and demanding attention with obnoxious persistence. Maya scratched behind his ears, the cat's loud purring somehow more honest than anything anyone here had said to her all afternoon.
Then Josh splashed out of the pool, dripping water everywhere, and grinned at her. "Hey, nice hat. Where'd you get it?"
"Thrift store," she said, surprised he'd noticed anything other than how awkward she'd been acting.
"Cool." He squinted at her phone screen. "You editing photos? I've been trying to learn actual photography instead of just, like, iPhone casual stuff."
And just like that, the hat didn't feel like hiding anymore. It was just a hat. A weird orange thrift store find that was actually kind of awesome.
"I could show you some apps," Maya found herself saying, standing up and leaving Mr. Whiskers to find another lap. "But first—" She kicked off her sandals. "—you're going down at sharks and minnows."
Taylor whooped from the pool. "FINALLY. Game on."
