Poolside Protocol
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her iPhone like a lifeline. The water shimmered with that perfect Instagram-filter glow, but her orange bikini felt entirely too bright, entirely too exposed. Or maybe entirely too not-her. She'd spent forty-five minutes editing her poolside selfie—fixing lighting, checking angles, wondering if she looked chill enough or if she was trying too hard.
Across the pool, Leo caught her eye. He was the guy whose Snapchat stories always seemed perfectly aesthetic, golden hour everything, captions that were somehow both cryptic and deep. But in person, he just looked... kind of awkward, actually. Like he was waiting for someone to tell him where to stand.
Then his grandma's golden retriever, Buster, spotted a squirrel and went full chaos mode—leaping straight into the pool with this majestic, uncoherent splash that sent water everywhere. Soaked everyone. Including Maya's phone, which she'd been holding like a nervous shield.
"My iPhone!" she yelped, fumbling as it slipped from her wet hands and splashed into the shallow end.
Leo dove in after it, surfacing triumphantly with her dripping device. "Saved it," he said, shaking water from his curls like an enthusiastic dog himself. "Though it might be, like, extremely dead."
But when Maya pressed the power button, it actually turned on. The screen flickered once, then displayed her unfinished post—poolside perfection interrupted by a literal dog making everything beautifully, ridiculously real.
"I think," Leo said, grinning, "that Buster just improved your aesthetic."
Maya looked at her phone, then at the chaos around them—wet swimsuits, laughter, Buster shaking water everywhere like he'd just won the Olympics. She pressed delete on the post. Some moments weren't meant for the feed.
"You want an orange soda from the cooler?" Leo asked. "I promise no dogs will interrupt."
She smiled. "Deal. But I'm keeping the camera off this time."
Some moments were better uncurated.
