Poolside Prophecy

Jordan leaned against the fence feeling like actual zombie material—three hours of sleep per night during finals week will do that to you. Skylar's graduation party raged behind him: laughter, splashing, bass shaking the patio, but he just wanted to vanish into the lounge chair and not exist for approximately forever.

Then he saw it: his little sister's plastic sphinx from her mythology elective, bobbing near the deep end like some tragic bath toy disaster. Before he could process why she'd brought it, Maya dared Tyler to retrieve it, and suddenly everyone was watching.

"Bet you won't."

Tyler shrugged. "Easy."

But as he waded in, the sky cracked open. Lightning—white-hot and dramatic—flared against gray clouds. The pool seemed to shiver. Then Buster, the neighbor's escape-artist dog, barreled through the fence gap, barking at thunder, and knocked Tyler sideways into the water.

Chaos. Perfect chaos. Jordan found himself actually laughing as Tyler surfaced sputtering, sphinx clutched like a prize, Buster barking triumphantly from the deck.

"You okay?" Jordan called, wading in.

"Totally fine," Tyler said, grinning. "Got the sphinx though. Achievement unlocked."

Something in Jordan's chest shifted. The weight of finals, the constant overthinking, performing for an invisible audience—it all felt lighter. He dove under, letting the cool water swallow him. When he broke the surface, Maya was losing it over Tyler's dramatic sphinx pose, the sky lit up again, and Jordan realized: this was it. This messy moment. Not the GPA obsession, not the college spiral. Just chlorine in his ears and his friends absolutely losing it over a plastic statue and a very confused dog.

He kicked water at Tyler. "Prophecy received, oh great sphinx."

"Shut up, Jordan."

But everyone was smiling. And for the first time all week, Jordan didn't feel like a zombie at all.
