Poolside Prophecy

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The water glittered with that fake-turquoise chemical blue, and somewhere inside her chest, her heart was doing cartwheels that definitely weren't the cute kind. This was it—the party that would either launch her into cool-kid territory or relegate her to permanent background character status.

"Yo Maya! You gonna stand there all day or what?" Jake called from the water, pushing wet hair back from his forehead. He was cute in that annoying way that made every thought in her head suddenly turn to mush. Maya adjusted her bikini top for the tenth time, acutely aware that everyone was definitely looking at her and definitely judging her non-swimming ass.

A rustling sound near the fence caught her attention. Maya slipped away from the chaos of splashing teenagers and bass-heavy playlists, following the noise into the relative quiet of the side yard. That's when she saw it: a scrawny calico cat crouched beneath a palm tree, looking at her with eyes that said, I see through your whole act.

Maya knelt slowly, extending her hand. "Hey little dude."

The cat inched forward, sniffing her fingers before something weird happened—it placed one paw right in the center of her palm, like it was checking her pulse or reading her future or some metaphorical bullshit.

"You gonna tell me my fortune?" Maya whispered, suddenly fighting back tears she didn't even know she was holding. "Because honestly, I could use the help."

The cat just stared at her with knowing eyes, then trotted off toward the neighbor's yard like its job here was done. Maya sat back on her heels, actually laughing. A stray cat had just seen more of her real self than anyone at this party ever would.

Her phone buzzed: a text from her best friend. "u okay??"

Maya typed back: "yeah. be there in a sec." She stood up, brushed dirt from her knees, and walked back toward the pool with something resembling actual confidence. Jake waved at her again from the water, and this time she didn't overthink it—she just cannonballed in, making a splash that definitely got everyone's attention. Sometimes that's all it took.
