Poolside Poser

The pool party at Jake's house was supposed to be my moment to shine, you know? Like, finally make varsity swimming team material instead of just warming the bench at practice. But there I was, hovering near the snack table while everyone else was actually having fun.

Then SHE walked in—Maya, looking like she belonged in a magazine. I'd been crushing on her since bio lab, and my brain decided this was the perfect moment to panic.

Suddenly, I hear this commotion by the pool gate. Some dude's Golden retriever goes BOLTING toward the water, straight through everyone's stuff. Towels flying, drinks knocking over, chaos everywhere. The owner's chasing it, screaming 'BUSTER!' like his life depended on it.

And then—it gets worse.

From somewhere behind Jake's house, this MASSIVE bull comes wandering out. Like, an actual bull. The thing was huge, horns and everything. Everyone's freaking out, climbing out of the pool, scrambling toward the house.

Maya's still in the shallow end, frozen. The bull's just standing there, looking confused, while the dog is splashing around like it's NBD.

I don't even think. I just dive in.

'Come on!' I grab Maya's hand, and we're swimming toward the far side of the pool, away from the bull. My heart's pounding but somehow I'm calm in the water—this is MY element, you know? The bull snorts and wanders back toward wherever it came from, probably wondering why these teenagers are losing their minds.

Later, Jake's dad is trying to figure out how a bull ended up in their backyard (fence breach, apparently), but that's not the point.

The point is, Maya sat with me by the pool for, like, an hour. We talked about everything—swimming, her art, how crazy that whole bull situation was. She even laughed at my terrible jokes.

Sometimes you find your courage in the weirdest moments. And sometimes it takes a runaway dog and a confused bull to help you figure out that maybe you're braver than you thought. Low-key best night of my life, even if I did smell like wet dog for three days.
