Poolside Politics

The **water** shimmered like liquid diamonds under the Friday afternoon sun, but Maya's stomach did nervous cartwheels anyway. This was it—the party of the year, hosted by Chloe, the queen bee of sophomore year whose Instagram stories basically defined their social hierarchy.

Maya stood by the edge of the **pool**, clutching her solo cup like a lifeline. She'd spent forty-five minutes perfecting her mascara, only for the humidity to threaten melting it off. Classic.

Then she saw him—Caleb. The **friend** she'd been secretly lowkey crushing on since seventh grade, now suddenly tall with this newfound jawline situation. He was laughing at something Jake said, his smile hitting different than she remembered.

Yo, you gonna stand there all day or actually get in?"

Maya jumped. Her neighbor's **cat**, Barnaby, had somehow followed her here and now sat regally on a lounge chair, judging everyone with yellow eyes. Great. Now she was the weird cat girl.

Before she could process the chaos, Jake's massive **dog**, a golden retriever named Buster who answered to no one, came tearing across the patio, spotted Barnaby, and proceeded to launch himself into the pool with the grace of a potato.

Chloe screamed. Splash. EVERYONE stared.

But then Caleb started cracking up, and suddenly the whole party was laughing, and Maya found herself giggling too because, like, what even was her life?

Smooth entrance," Caleb said, splashing over to where she stood knee-deep. He grinned. "Wanna help me wrangle this chaos?"

Maya looked at the soaked dog, the unimpressed cat, the gorgeous guy whose dimples were doing things to her heart rate. She dove in.

Summer wasn't supposed to be perfect, she realized. It was supposed to be messy and weird and absolutely unhinged. And honestly? She was kinda here for it.
