Poolside Pivot Point

The padel court at the Rivera's country club wasn't exactly where I saw my social life imploding, but there we were. My so-called best friend Lily had invited her new crush Jake—the same guy who'd ghosted me last semester—to join our game. Classic.

"You've got this, Mia!" Jake called out, flashing that smile that made everyone forgive his absolute garbage behavior. I gripped my racquet tighter, sweat dripping down my back. The ball sailed toward me, and I swung with everything I had—missing completely and spinning into the fence. Jake's laugh wasn't even mean, which somehow made it worse.

That's when Rufus, Lily's chaotic golden retriever, burst through the gate. Mrs. Rivera had been chasing him for three blocks, yelling something about the pool area. Rufus, being a certified agent of chaos, spotted Jake's expensive sunglasses on the bench and decided they were his new chew toy.

The chaos broke everything open. We were all cracking up, even Lily, and somehow Jake's attempt to wrestle sunglasses from a dog made him seem almost human again. We ended up abandoning the game and jumping into the pool fully clothed, Rufus barking triumphantly from the deck with sunglasses somehow still on his head.

Later, drying off and sharing a massive plate of nachos, Jake actually apologized for ghosting me. "I was going through stuff," he said, not making excuses. "I'm working on being less of a bull-headed idiot."

Lily and I exchanged looks—the kind that says best friends without speaking. Maybe this summer wouldn't be about losing people after all. Maybe it would be about figuring out who actually deserved to stay.

"Truce?" Jake held up his nacho like a peace offering.

"Truce," I said. "But you're playing Rufus in padel next time."

Rufus barked like he understood everything. The dog really was the smartest one of us.
