Poolside Philosophy

Maya's heart did that stupid flutter thing whenever she saw Liam across the pool. Friday night at Jessica's house, and somehow she'd positioned herself on the inflatable unicorn directly in his line of sight. Smooth. Real smooth.

"Yo, Maya, stop flexing on that inflatable," her best friend Sarah called out, tossing her a soda. "You look like you're about to fall off."

Maya caught it one-handed, trying to play it cool despite the awkward wobble. "I'm not flexing. I'm strategically positioned. There's a difference."

"Right. Strategic crushing more like."

Jessica's golden retriever, Buster, bounded over, nearly tipping Maya into the water. The dog had zero chill, just like this whole party. Maya had spent three hours on her hair, and now humidity was absolutely destroying it. Why did she care? Liam had barely spoken two words to her all year, yet here she was, performing like she was in some rom-com montage.

Then the sliding glass door opened, and Chloe walked in. Chloe, who'd somehow gotten hot over summer break. Chloe, who currently had Liam's full attention. Maya felt that familiar sinking feeling in her chest, the one that hit whenever she realized she was playing a supporting role in her own life.

"Watch this," Sarah whispered, nudging her.

Chloe, being Chloe, decided to show everyone her "fox" impression she'd learned at drama camp. She dropped into a crouch, hands curled like paws, and let out this sound that was somewhere between a yodel and a dying cat. The whole pool area went silent.

Buster, confused by this noise, bounded over to investigate.

"I'm a fox!" Chloe announced dramatically, then slipped on the wet deck.

It was like slow motion—Chloe flailing, Buster barking, everyone gasping. Chloe hit the water with a massive splash, completely taking out Liam's carefully positioned drink and soaking his phone.

The silence that followed was absolute.

Then Maya started laughing. Not mean laughing, just genuine couldn't-hold-it-in laughter. And then other people joined in, including surprisingly, Chloe herself, surfacing with wet hair plastered to her face.

"Well," Chloe said, dripping. "That's one way to make an entrance."

Liam, checking his soaked phone, looked at Chloe. "You're ridiculous."

"Ridiculously awesome?" Chloe countered.

Liam actually cracked a smile. "Maybe."

Maya caught Sarah's eye. Her friend was right—she had been flexing. Performing. Trying so hard to be the person she thought she should be instead of just... being. Chloe had just embarrassed herself completely and didn't even care.

"Hey," Liam said, looking over at Maya. "You're the one who knows about phones, right? Is this salvageable?"

Maya blinked. She was the one who knew about phones? Since when?

"Yeah," she said, sliding off the inflatable. "I can probably help. Put it in rice immediately."

"You're a lifesaver."

As they walked inside, Maya's phone buzzed. A text from her mom: "How's the party?"

She typed back: "Unexpected. But good."

And for the first time all night, she actually meant it.
