Poolside Paranoia

swimmingwaterspy

The water wasn't actually that cold, but Maya's hands were shaking anyway.

'You're being ridiculous,' Chloe whispered, adjusting her bikini top with practiced ease. 'Just swim already.'

Maya stood at the edge of Tyler's backyard pool, surrounded by half the sophomore class. Someone had brought speakers. Someone else had brought a vibe that made Maya feel like she'd missed an essential memo about how to be fifteen.

'I'm just... gonna hang,' Maya said, which was exactly what someone who couldn't swim would say.

But that wasn't even true. She could swim. What she couldn't do was exist around these people without feeling like she was underwater and everyone else was breathing normally.

Then she saw it — Tyler's older brother, Lucas, crouched behind the outdoor bar, phone angled toward the pool like he was documenting wildlife. A spy. Literally recording them.

Maya's stomach did something complicated. Lucas was exactly the kind of hot that made her forget basic motor functions. Also, he'd just graduated, which made him ancient and unattainable and perfect.

So Maya did what any rational person would do: she fake-casually waded into the pool, making eye contact with Lucas the entire time like they shared some secret spy mission. The water hit her waist. Then her chest. Then she was fully submerged, opening her eyes in the chlorinated blur, feeling powerful and mysterious and not at all like she was silently praying she wouldn't embarrass herself.

When she surfaced, Lucas was still watching. He gave her this tiny nod, almost imperceptible, like: I see you.

Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. She spent the next hour pretending to be genuinely fascinated by pool noodle sword fights just to stay near his line of sight.

Later, drying off on a lounge chair while Chloe dramatically recounted something someone named Kayla said, Maya's phone buzzed.

Unknown number: u looked like a mermaid in there lol

Maya stared. Then texted back: who is this

Unknown number: lucas. tyler's brother. i wasn't being creepy i swear, just helping him with his film project

A film project. He was in film school. Of course he was.

Maya typed: so i was basically your actor

lucas: best actor i've had all summer 🏆

She watched him across the pool, still crouched by the bar with his phone. This time when their eyes met, he smiled. Not a spy smile. A real one.

'You're being weird,' Chloe said. 'Why are you grinning like that?'

Maya slipped into the water again, letting the chlorine cover her expression. 'No reason.'
