Poolside Paradox

My fedora sat crooked on my head—a bold choice I'd immediately regret. At fifteen, fashion experimentation should come with a warning label. Enter at your own risk.

The vitamin shop AC blasted against my summer sweat while my friends lived their best lives at Miller's pool. "Bro, you're missing it," Kayla had texted, followed by seven crying emojis. The FOMO was real.

"Can I help you find anything?" I asked, channeling my inner retail professional.

The guy pushed his sunglasses onto his forehead. Palm trees framed the storefront windows behind him, mocking my indoor existence. "Looking for something to help with... energy."

I gestured to the wall of supplements like I knew what I was doing. Meanwhile, my palms had started sweating—a dead giveaway that I was sixteen and profoundly awkward around anything resembling a cute boy.

"You swim?" he asked suddenly, nodding toward my employee badge.

"Not competitively. Just... recreational swimming. Why?" My voice cracked. Cool.

"My cousin's hosting a thing tonight. Pool, music, zero supervision." He slid his phone across the counter. Loser number. "If you want to actually go swimming instead of... whatever this is."

I stared at his contact info, realizing something wild: I wasn't missing out. I was about to bear witness to an actual plot twist.

My phone buzzed again. Kayla: "ALEX IS HAVING A PARTY TONIGHT"

The vitamin shop guy—Alex—waited for my response. Outside, the palm trees swayed in the heat. My hat felt suddenly less ridiculous, more like armor for whatever happened next.

"What time?" I asked.

He grinned. "Seven. And lose the hat."

Some things, I decided, were worth the social risk. Even if it meant showing up to my first real party bearing the mark of retail worker dignity and a fedora I should've burned weeks ago.
