Poolside Papaya Summer

Maya stood at the edge of the **pool**, chlorine smell thick in her nose, while everyone else splashed and screamed like they'd invented water. She'd been **running** from this moment since seventh grade—when Jordan Baker laughed at her one-piece and called her "Maya the mermaid who forgot how to swim."

Now it was sophomore year. Jordan was somewhere in the deep end, showing off for Chloe. Maya clutched her towel like a shield.

"Yo, Maya!" Jason called from the patio. "Truth or dare!"

The group silenced. This was it—the social suicide checkpoint. "Truth," she said automatically.

"Boring!" Jasmine rolled her eyes. "Do a dare instead. Eat this." She held out a slice of **papaya**.

Maya stared at the orange flesh. She'd never had papaya. What if she hated it? What if she made that face, the one where her nose wrinkled and everyone laughed?

"Unless you're scared," Jordan added.

Something in Maya snapped. She grabbed the papaya and took a bite. Sweet. Weirdly musky. Nothing like the apples and bananas she'd lived on safely for fifteen years.

"Well?" Jasmine asked.

"It's... actually kind of good," Maya said. And then, because apparently the papaya gave her courage: "Truth or dare, Jordan?"

Jordan blinked. "Dare."

"I dare you to admit you still sleep with that stuffed turtle from third grade."

The pool went silent. Then Jordan grinned. "Only on exam weeks."

Everyone laughed, but different this time. Real. Maya set down her towel. The papaya had tasted like bravery. She slipped into the water, and it wasn't like running anymore—it was like finally learning to swim.
