Poolside Papaya Perfect

Maya tugged her oversized bucket hat lower, grateful for its wide brim to hide behind. The summer heat was absolutely *roasting*—like, actually illegal temps—and the neighborhood pool party was the only place anyone wanted to be.

She watched from the edge as Noah Hernandez emerged from the water, droplets streaming down his shoulders like something straight out of a movie. Maya's heart did that nervous little flutter it always did when he was around, which was *lowkey* embarrassing because she'd been crushing on him since seventh grade and had still barely said three words to him.

The pool's lane divider cable bobbed in the water, separating the shallow end where the little kids splashed from the deep end where the older kids hung out. Maya's friends were already there, laughing and being extra loud in that way people do when they're trying to get someone's attention.

"Maya! Get in here!" her best friend Jada shouted. "The water's literally perfect!"

Maya shook her head. She wasn't feeling confident enough for a swimsuit moment, especially not with Noah looking like that. Besides, she'd accidentally packed her sister's bikini instead of her own, and the struggle was *real*.

Instead, she found herself at the snack table, staring at the most random fruit platter she'd ever seen. There was watermelon, pineapple, mango, and something bright orange and unfamiliar that looked like it was trying too hard.

"What even is that?" a voice said right next to her.

Maya jumped. It was Noah. *Noah.* Standing two feet away, dripping pool water, looking at the fruit platter like it was a puzzle he needed to solve.

"Um, I think it's papaya?" Maya managed, proud that her voice only cracked a little. "My mom says it's an acquired taste. Like, basically adult territory."

Noah picked up a piece and examined it. "Challenge accepted, then." He popped it into his mouth and immediately made a face. "Okay, wow. That's... interesting. Like, does it taste like soap to you, or is that just me?"

Maya laughed. For real laughed. "Yes! Finally someone agrees! I thought I was the only one."

"You wanna try the other stuff?" Noah gestured to the rest of the fruit platter. "We can rate them. Like, officially. For science."

"For science," Maya agreed, pulling her hat back so she could actually see him properly.

They spent the next twenty minutes sitting by the pool, legs dangling in the cool water, rating various fruits on a scale of one to ten. Noah thought watermelon was "basic but necessary." Maya defended pineapple's honor. They both agreed that whatever those weird green things were, they should be illegal.

"You know," Noah said quietly, "I'm glad you decided to stay out of the pool. Otherwise I'd still be over there pretending I knew how to play water volleyball."

Maya felt her face heat up. "I'm glad I stayed out too. Even if the papaya was a crime against humanity."

Noah laughed, and something in Maya's chest did that fluttery thing again—but this time, it didn't feel embarrassing. It felt like possibility.

"Same time tomorrow?" he asked, standing up and heading back toward the water. "For, like, fruit evaluation purposes? Obviously."

Maya adjusted her hat and smiled. "Obviously."

As she watched him dive back into the pool, she thought that maybe, just maybe, summer was going to be way better than she'd planned. And she definitely needed to thank her mom for buying that weird papaya.
