Poolside Papaya Disaster

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers working through her coils until they sprang into perfect definition. Three hours of work. For Jake's party. Because apparently sixteen-year-olds still had pool parties like they were in middle school, and apparently Maya still cared enough about Jake's dimples to spend her entire Friday getting ready.

"You're vibrating," said Chloe, already in her bikini with sunglasses perched on her head. "Chill. It's just Jake."

"Just Jake whose abs look like they were carved by Greek gods," Maya mumbled, grabbing her tote. "Let's just go before I lose my nerve."

The party was already in full swing when they arrived—music thumping, bodies cannonballing into the water, someone's little brother chasing the host's cat around the patio furniture. Maya immediately gravitated toward the snack table, because social anxiety could always be managed with enough tropical fruit punch and processed chips.

Then Jake emerged from the pool, water dripping from his hair like he was in a slow-motion movie scene. He waved. Maya waved back, then immediately knocked over the papaya smoothie she'd been nursing. The bright orange explosion splashed across her white tank top.

So naturally she did what any rational person would do—she sprinted toward the pool to rinse it off.

But she didn't see the cat. Or maybe the cat didn't see her. Either way, something furry and indignant scrambled between her ankles, and suddenly Maya was airborne, then submerged, surfacing to half the party staring at her.

Jake was laughing. Not mean laughing, but genuine, doubled-over laughing that showed his teeth.

"I'll be right back," he gasped, and returned with a towel and another papaya smoothie. "For round two?"

Maya's hair was wrecked. Her makeup was gone. She smelled like chlorine and tropical fruit. And Jake was sitting beside her, asking about her summer plans while his friends did cannonballs in the background.

"So," he said, "your hair looks pretty cool like this. All wild and stuff."

Maya blinked. Then she laughed—really laughed, because somehow, somehow, this disaster was actually working.

"Thanks," she said. "Took me three hours to mess it up this perfectly."

Jake smiled, and Maya realized she couldn't wait to tell Chloe everything. The cat incident alone would be legendary.
