Poolside Papaya Catastrophe
Maya's stomach did backflips as she stepped through the gate of Jessica's pool party. The whole sophomore class seemed to be there, already bronzing like they'd been summer-ready since birth. She clutched her bag of spinach artichoke dip like a security blanket. Mom's idea. Classic.
"Hey! You made it!" Jessica materialized, bikini perfect, already halfway through something pink and frozen. "Grab some food—that's, like, basically the point of these things."
Maya drifted toward the food table, hyper-aware of her one-piece beneath oversized clothes. That's when she saw it: a bowl of papaya chunks nestled between chips and salsa. Who served papaya at a pool party? Wealthy people, apparently. She stabbed one with trembling fingers. Weird choice, but anything to look busy.
"Bad call, new girl."
Maya jumped. A guy in faded swim trunks sat on the pool edge, legs dangling in water. Not a popular guy—she'd seen him in AP Bio. Connor something.
"Excuse me?"
"Papaya." Connor nodded at her fork. "Tastes like soap wrapped in a melon's disappointment."
Maya blinked, then laughed. The papaya forgotten, she found herself sitting beside him. They talked about nothing real—teachers, the weird smell of the locker room, how papaya had somehow become a social signifier.
Then: SPLASH.
A cat, of all things, came tearing out from behind the lounge chairs, chased by Jessica's golden retriever. The papaya bowl went flying. Maya's spinach dip hit the deck.
Chaos erupted. Screams. Laughter. Maya found herself knee-deep in water, helping scoop chunks of papaya out of the pool while Connor wrangled the dog. Both drenched. Both ridiculous.
"Well," Connor said, hair plastered to his forehead, papaya somehow smeared across one cheek. "That just happened."
Maya looked down at her one-piece, finally visible. Soaked. Ugly. Amazing.
"Yeah," she said, and meant it. "It really did."
The party moved on. But by the cat's second lap around the pool, Maya and Connor had claimed the shallow end, papaya casualties and all. Sometimes the weirdest ingredients made the best stories.
