Poolside Papaya
Maya's crushed **velvet hat** sat pulled low over her eyes, a dark shield against the blinding July sun and the terrifying reality that Tyler—the Tyler who'd pitched a no-hitter last week—was actually talking to her.
"You gonna try that or just stare at it?" Tyler nodded toward the paper plate in her lap.
The **papaya** sat there like an alien artifact, all speckled orange flesh and black seeds that looked weirdly intimate. Maya had never even seen one before, let alone considered putting it in her mouth. But Chloe had brought them from her mom's health kick, and apparently this was what cool people ate now. This was what Tyler, who literally had **baseball** recruiters watching him, ate.
"Yeah," Maya lied, because that's what you did when you were sixteen and the cutest guy in tenth grade was five feet away. "Love it. It's my favorite."
The lie sat heavy in the humid air. Behind her, someone screamed as they got shoved into the **water**, followed immediately by the explosion of a splash and laughter that felt miles away from this increasingly awkward conversation.
Tyler's grin tilted sideways. "You hate it, don't you?"
Maya's face burned. "What? No. I—"
"It's okay. It tastes like soap. My mom keeps buying them." He leaned closer, his sunscreen smell mixing with chlorine. "Wanna trade for the rest of my chips?"
The relief was so intense Maya almost laughed. Instead, she slid her plate toward him, and as their fingers brushed, she thought: this was it. This was that moment everyone talked about. Not epic or movie-perfect, but standing in someone's backyard in wet clothes, trading papaya for chips, and it was somehow better.
"You're not gonna finish that, right?" Chloe called from the pool edge, already grabbing Maya's abandoned fruit.
Maya adjusted her hat, finally meeting Tyler's eyes. "Definitely not."
